Zack Snyder Asked Chris Nolan For His Bat-Blessing

Christopher Nolan is responsible for one of the greatest events in the 75 year-plus history of Batman: The critically acclaimed and hugely successful “Dark Knight Trilogy.”

He’s also responsible for Zack Snyder directing the predecessor to BATMAN v SUPERMAN, MAN OF STEEL.

So when Zack Snyder decided he wanted to use Batman in what was originally a direct sequel to the aforementioned MAN OF STEEL (which Nolan produced and co-wrote its story), Snyder did the right thing and asked the filmmaker (who does get an executive producer credit on BvS along with wife Emma Thomas) if he would be OK – or not – with Snyder using Batman in it.

"You tell me if you don’t want me to do it," Snyder asked Nolan. "Well, we don’t own these characters,” Nolan responded. “When you’re done making Batman movies, someone else will.”

Chris is absolutely right: neither he nor Snyder own Batman and Warner Bros. would indeed make more Batman movies. I’m sure it made Chris feel better by getting to kinda-sorta pick his own Batman on film director – as well as securing a promise from Warner Bros. that “The Dark Knight Trilogy” would never be touched, altered, or “messed with” by another filmmaker. Regardless, I’m sure it wasn’t easy seeing someone else bring Batman back to the big screen – especially since only four years have passed since Nolan’s final Batman film (2012’s THE DARK KNIGHT RISES). Here’s what Snyder had to say about that deal…

"I think he found it a little bit hard. I would feel the same way. In a lot of ways BATMAN v SUPERMAN is a very personal concept. It is just two people trying to understand each other’s point of view."

I'm sure some people will say, "Snyder didn't have to ask Nolan sh*t!" Maybe he didn't; as he said himself, Chris doesn't own Batman. But clearly, it was the right thing to do and Snyder is obviously a stand-up dude. In other words, it's called respect.
