In case you didn’t know, 2026 marks the 40th anniversary of the classic, game-changing Batman comic book story, THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS.
And DC Comics has some big celebration plans! Just a quick personal anecdote…
In 1986, I was a 20-year-old college student. I also was in my “Closet Batman Fan” period. So, I’d stop at my local mall (Central Mall) in Port Arthur, Texas, weekly and visit the Walden Books store to read the latest Batman comics from DC. At that time, the bookstore still had several spinner racks of comics, FYI. And that is how and where I discovered THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS. Yeah, I just read ’em off the rack, standing up inside Walden Books without ever purchasing a single issue.
I did not actually purchase the 4-part graphic novel until 1989, during the height of Batmania surrounding the release of the Tim Burton-directed/Michael Keaton-starring BATMAN.
So there you go. ANYWAY…
