DETECTIVE COMICS #1110 Review

Welcome back to the greatest website in the world, Batman-On-Film.com! That can
mean only one thing! Tom Taylor and DC Comics have dropped the latest issue of Detective
Comics, issue#1110! Taylor is once again joined by artist Mikel Janin, who not only draws but also
colors the book. Taylor really hasn’t been living up to the back of his baseball card with this arc.
Can he rebound? Will Batman take back his longest-running title? Let’s get into it!

This is the best issue in this Green Arrow/Black Canary tale. The story is
more fluid and now has a clearer personal angle. Taylor does a magnificent job with the Mission:
Impossible search-and-rescue angle of this book. One of Taylor’s strong suits has always been
his ability to write tactical action. This is a grounded tale, and seeing Batman act as part of a
SWAT team is always something I enjoy. I tried to think of this arc as almost a “Batman and the
Outsiders” style of tale. I just can’t get over the fact that Batman is still riding shotgun on his
own title. This feels very much like the Dinah show, and while the story is excellent, this is
Detective Comics.

Can Janin stay on as artist extraordinaire on Detective forever? What is not to love about this
book? The action is wonderful; the suspense is high. Janin doesn’t disappoint. The book opens
with a great action piece, followed by another and another. In a book with this much action, it is
very impressive that Taylor managed to fit in as much story as he did. Janin doesn’t carry this
book this month, but that is not for lack of trying; Janin’s consistency is beyond impressive.
Tackling all artistic duties isn’t a simple task, yet here I am, looking at another stunner month
after month.

Overall, Detective #1110 is a solid comic book, but I need Batman to shine in his legacy title. I
love sidekicks, just not Batman being the sidekick in his own book. It seems there is a Batman
book for everyone these days.

Regardless of how I feel about some titles, this is the most diverse lineup of Batman books that I
can remember. I no longer hear that there are too many Batman books being printed. All I hear is
that they are all amazing in their own right. Read ‘em, review them on your own, enjoy them,
debate them. – Peter Verra
