BATMAN: CAPED CRUSADER | S2E8: “Zero Hour”

“Zero Hour” is a standout chapter of BATMAN: CAPED CRUSADER Season 2, giving Carrie Kelley (who we first met in an episode last season) her most dynamic spotlight yet as The Gray Ghost — a mantle inspired by the fictional pulp hero Bruce also adored as a kid, making her the closest thing to a “Robin” we’ve gotten in this series. Of course, Carrie Kelley and The Gray Ghost are nods to THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS and BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES, respectively. The episode also delivers a chilling (pun intended lol!) reinvention of Mr. Freeze in the form of Mister Zero (which was his original name debuting in DETECTIVE COMICS #373 in 1958), an underworld “cleaner” who freezes bodies into horrific ice sculptures at his East End factory, voiced with cold, mechanical precision by Kevin Michael Richardson (who voiced The Joker in THE BATMAN animated series) and armed with liquid nitrogen and brutal ice tongs instead of a freeze‑ray. As Batman confronts Zero’s escalating threat and Carrie proves she’s more than just a reckless wannabe kid vigilante, we finally learn Rupert Thorne’s fate, tying off one of the season’s lingering threads. – Bill “Jett” Ramey
