The September BOF Mailbag #2

Here’s the final BOF Mailbag for September 2019. Thanks for all the questions — especially since the request for them came late and at the last minute. Now, let’s get to ’em! – Bill “Jett” Ramey

JETT SAYS: Well, “ever” is a long time, if you get my drift.  I think at some point down the line — like WAY down the line — Warner Bros. might give a shared DC on film universe another go.  However, I don’t think any of the current actors who are starring in DC movies for the studio (Gal Gadot, Jason Mamoa, Margot Robbie, Zachary Levi, Robert Pattinson, etc.) will be involved at all.

For the foreseeable future, it’s WB’s plan to focus on making good solo DC movies under the helm of talented filmmakers…and I’m totally down with that.

Is the major casting for THE BATMAN complete and we are just waiting for JOKER to be released to not steal its thunder or is it still ongoing? BTW, did you ever get to watch THE BOYS?

JETT SAYS: I’m betting that others have been officially cast in THE BATMAN other than Robert Pattinson and Warner Bros. simply isn’t ready to publicly announce it yet.  And yes, I strongly suspect that we’ll start hearing casting news once JOKER has been out a month or so.  With that said, I highly doubt that every role in the movie has been cast already.

Two questions to be answered from your Texan perspective:

1) Have you ever read or watched PREACHER, and what’s your take on it — and on the series finale, — if you are a fan?
2) Now that it’s almost here… is JOKER for YOU?

JETT SAYS: 1) I have not, so I’ve got nothing for you on this question, and 2) I’ll found out tomorrow (Tuesday, October 1, 2019) because that’s when I’m seeing it.

JETT SAYS: I do not…but even if I did (like, for 100% sure), I would say a word. Not only does BOF not do spoilers, but it also isn’t a “scoop site.”

Do you know major plot points of THE BATMAN that you cant reveal or wish you didn’t know?!

JETT SAYS: No on both accounts, sir. I will not allow myself to be spoiled, nor would I spoil anything for anyone else.

How likely is it that JJ Abrams gets to make Superman? Which filmmaker would you prefer instead?

JETT SAYS: Well, I think his deal with Warner Bros. is more about Bad Robot working on various TV projects, not specifically films.  But I certainly would rule out Abrams taking a Superman movie on…again (FLYBY, anyone?).

I’ve got nothing against Abrams, though his first take (script) for a Superman movie (again, FLYBY) was sort of “out there” — though not as out there as Tim Burton’s SUPERMAN LIVES.  Maybe it’ll end up happening, we’ll see I guess.

JETT SAYS: Barely got through the first issue of DAMNED and didn’t read the following ones, so all I can say is that I was that keen on it.  Lee’s art was, as it always is, fantastic, though.  As far as my favorite LB Batman comic?  That would be BATMAN: NOEL because he not only provided the art, but he wrote it as well.

With THE BATMAN going for a noir-style, do you think the movie will be set in the past or present-day? I’ve always wanted to see a ’40s era Batman movie. Where is DC going from here? Are they still planning on a Green Arrow movie? What’s going on with Supergirl?

JETT SAYS: 1) I do not believe THE BATMAN is going to be a period piece.  2) Where is DC going from here?  Well, DC is going to continue publishing comics.  If you mean DC-based films from Warner Bros., they’ve said explicitly that their plan is to produce solo movies and will not be concerned about continuity and a shared universe.  3) Besides David Goyer writing the SUPERMAX script many years ago (which went nowhere), I don’t think WB has ever really planned on making a Green Arrow movie.  4) No idea — that’s another one that I’ll believe it’s going to happen when I see it on the big screen.

Do you really think JOKER will be the gamechanger everybody is talking about? Will Phoenix top Heath [Ledger]?

JETT SAYS: I don’t know if it’ll be a gamechanger, but I’ll have a better idea of that once I see it at my local press screening tomorrow (10/1/19).  I don’t think Joaquin Phoenix was trying to top Heath Ledger and that’s something for fans to discuss.  Personally, I hope he’s just as great as Heath was with his performance as The Joker in THE DARK KNIGHT.  Phoenix’s turn as the character will not affect the greatness of Heath’s in any way, shape, or form.

Out of your 5 favorite Batman movies, if you had to choose one that you could never watch again, which movie do you pick?

JETT SAYS: My top 5 favorite Batman movies are BATMAN BEGINS, THE DARK KNIGHT, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, BATMAN ’89, and THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE.  If I could never watch one of those again, it would probably be BATMAN ’89.

JETT SAYS: I assume you’re talking about Harvey Dent/Two-Face and not Harvey Bullock, right? If so, the word is that Two-Face is indeed in THE BATMAN. I’m not sure how big the role will be because there are several villains in the movie, so they say, and I figure that most of the these villains roles are more like extended cameos.
