No clickbait/misleading headline from me here at BOF. While visiting with Josh Horowitz at the Golden Globes, Matt Reeves talked mostly about THE PENGUIN, a possible Season 2 of THE PENGUIN, and THE BATMAN: PART II. And at the very end, Josh asked him about Rob Pattinson’s Batman- that is also Matt Reeves’ Batman- being absorbed into the DCU. Here are a few blurbs of what he had to say…
On the success of THE PENGUIN…
We were really excited for the show and to see that everybody else got as excited as they did, that really means a lot.
On a second season of THE PENGUIN…
Obviously, we’re doing THE BATMAN 2, we want to get the timing right on that. Our plan and our hope is to absolutely do another season, we just have to come up with the idea that we think is the right idea, which is what we’re working on.
On THE BATMAN: PART II filming in 2025…
This year we’re going to be shooting and I’m very excited about it. There’s been a lot of stuff going on. It’s taken longer than I would have wanted but, also, I’m super excited about what we’re doing and I can’t wait to share that with everybody.
In regards to what he has in store for THE BATMAN: PART II…
I think the story is a continuation, in a certain way, and completely different in another. It’s going to show different sides of Rob. I think it’s going to be really exciting, I think it’s going to be really cool.

Reeves also mentioned that “there’s been a lot going on” that affected him finishing the script, but he’s happy where it’s at right now and OK with the release date being pushed back a year.
At the very end, Josh mentioned that Gunn had told him that he “contemplated” having Rob Pattinson’s Batman become the DCU Batman and asked Reeves what he thought about that prospect…
Sure, yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, it really comes down to whether or not it makes sense. What’s been great is there was a story that I wanted to tell that we’re calling ‘The Epic Crime Saga’ which is the thrust of what we wanted to do. It’s been important to me to be able to play that out. James and Peter have been really, really great about that and they’re letting us do that.”
What the future brings, I can’t really tell you. I have no idea right now except that my head is down now about getting THE BATMAN: PART II shooting and to make it something special which is, of course, the most important thing.

When pressed further and asked if Gunn and co. really, really, really want Rob as the DCU Batman, Reeves responded, “I don’t know. We’ll have to see where that goes.”
I’ll tell you where that goes: NOWHERE. It’s been out there for a while that Reeves doesn’t want his version of Batman in a shared universe and Gunn has said several times that he respects Reeves’ decision. This 100% reminded me of back in 2018-2019 when Reeves was asked if Ben Affleck was going to star in his THE BATMAN, and Reeves responded — with that same look as he gave Horowitz — “Uh yeah, that’s the plan” when it definitely was NOT by that time. He’s being a team player and being respectful to James Gunn and Peter Safran too.
I know it makes for a great headline and there are tons of clickbait articles about how it’s going to happen/is already a done deal. But when Gunn and DC Studios get around to the DCU Batman, it’ll be with a different actor as a different Dark Knight…or a Blue Caped Crusader for the DCU Batman.
