DC Studios co-bosses, James Gunn and Peter Safran, recently met with the press to provide an update on what’s happening at the studio. Of course, they covered all DCS projects, but for BOF purposes, we’ll focus only on the Batman-related ones.
THE BATMAN: PART II
Nothing new here. Matt Reeves is still finishing the script and it is expected to start filming later this year (2025). As we all know, THE BATMAN SAGA is under the ELSEWORLDS banner and is not part of the connected/shared universe DCU. For everything about this film, check out BOF’s Everything About THE BATMAN: PART II Page.
BATMAN: THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD
Gunn and Safran said that they have a writer working on the script for their DCU Batman project; though they didn’t name said writer “as it would put too much pressure on the guy.” Apparently, Andy Muschietti is still on board to direct and will be the first one to read the script when it’s finished, per Gunn.
Also — and this we already know — both Gunn and Safran said that Robert Pattinson would not be the DCU Batman. Hopefully, that’s finally put to rest…but it probably isn’t.
TBATB centers on Batman and his son, Damien Wayne, as Robin. It is based on Grant Morrison’s Batman run from DC Comics. (DEADLINE)
CLAYFACE
CLAYFACE starts filming this Summer and will be released on October 2, 2026. More details of that film can be found HERE. (DEADLINE)
UPDATE: Though Matt Reeves developed the idea of a Clayface move, it was ultimately decided that the film and character should be DCU. I”t was important that Clayface be part of the DCU. It’s an origin story for a classic Batman villain that we want to have in our world,” Safran said. “He’s very much outside of the sort of grounded, non-super meta-human characters in Matt’s world,” Gunn added. THE PENGUIN (Season 2)
Part of Matt Reeves’ THE BATMAN SAGA, the first season of THE PENGUIN was a huge hit and there’s been talk about doing a second one. But tap the breaks on that for now says Peter Safran. “There’s a lot of moving pieces, including Colin (Farrell) himself,” said Safran. Colin Farrell — who just won a SAG award for THE PENGUIN — said the following (per VARIETY) about doing another season…
I don’t want it. I don’t not want it. We all left it in the ring in those eight hours. I would hate to, just because of a quote-unquote success, have to go again and for it to be a diluted version of what people seem to feel it is, majoritively. So I’m in no rush. I have no deep desire to do it. … Sure, if they think of something that works in conjunction as a parallel to Matt Reeves’ cinematic universe and it’s a good idea, I’m open to it. But it’s not something concerning me.
I’m of the opinion that there doesn’t need to be another season of THE PENGUIN — at least not until after THE BATMAN: PART II — but that decision is above my pay grade. We’ll see. Regardless, Colin Farrell’s Oz Cobb will be seen again in THE BATMAN: PART II. (DEADLINE)
So that is that. Stay tuned to BOF for our coverage of all these projects. – Bill “Jett” Ramey
