Dolby and Warner Bros. have informed BOF that Tim Burton’s BATMAN and BATMAN RETURNS will return to theaters for a special one-night engagement on August 25, 2025, in ultra-vivid Dolby Vision picture and immersive Dolby Atmos sound, exclusively at Dolby Cinema.

On Friday, August 1, 2025, tickets for BATMAN and BATMAN RETURNS will go on sale, so fans in the U.S. can reserve their seats to see the film at a Dolby Cinema at AMC location near them. For tickets, CLICK HERE for BATMAN and CLICK HERE for BATMAN RETURNS.

I was lucky enough to be, well, alive when both these films were released.  I was 23 for BATMAN in 1989 and 26 for BATMAN RETURNS 3 years later, and was there on opening night for both.  If you’ve never seen either on the big screen — especially BATMAN — and you’re a Batman fan, here’s your chance!  I’ll definitely be seeing B89, we’ll see (probably not) about RETURNS.😏

August 1, 2025 (San Francisco, CA) — Raise the Bat-Signal: Today Dolby and Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group announced that Tim Burton’s landmark Super Hero films Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992) will be brought back for a special one-night engagement on August 25 in ultra-vivid Dolby Vision picture and immersive Dolby Atmos sound. The films will be screened exclusively at over 160 Dolby Cinema at AMC Theatres locations in the US. Tickets go on sale today.

Whether you’re experiencing Batman’s (Michael Keaton) most heroic moments or witnessing chilling scenes with iconic villains like The Joker (Jack Nicholson), The Penguin (Danny DeVito), and Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer), Dolby Vision transforms every frame with deeper blacks, sharper contrast, and more vivid colors. Meanwhile, Dolby Atmos elevates the film’s soundscape and score with pristine depth and dimensionality, allowing everything from the Batwing’s engines to Danny Elfman’s iconic score to envelop audiences in multi-dimensional immersive sound. Together, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos magnify Burton’s trademark visual style and enrich Gotham’s gothic atmosphere.

“I hadn’t watched these films since I made them, and seeing them again with this level of clarity, beauty, color, and sound felt really new and exciting,” said filmmaker Tim Burton. “Dolby Atmos and Vision brought it all to life in a fresh way.”

Batman and Batman Returns remain seminal films in the history of the Super Hero genre,” said Michelle Maddalena, Vice President of Global Content and Industry Relations.  “The new presentation of these films in Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos honors Tim Burton’s bold creativity while showcasing how far audio and image technology have evolved.”

“Tim Burton’s acclaimed Batman films deliver a dark, iconic vision of Gotham City that continues to influence the modern superhero genre today,” said Jeff Goldstein, President of Global Distribution at Warner Bros. Pictures. “With their advancements over the past decades, Dolby now transforms these beloved classics into completely new cinematic experiences through Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, delivering unprecedented visual and audio fidelity.”

Burton’s Batman films are not only celebrated classics, but they also ushered in a new era for cinematic audio, marking a historic moment for Dolby and the entire film industry. When Batman Returns premiered in 1992, it broke new ground as the first feature film presented in Dolby Digital, the revolutionary audio technology that would become synonymous with “surround sound” in cinema. This revolutionary legacy continues today through Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, Dolby’s latest innovations, which have transformed how audiences experience movies today by delivering awe-inspiring picture quality together with incredible immersive sound.

Moviegoers in the US can purchase tickets to see the films at Dolby Cinema at AMC locations near them by visiting https://dolbylabs.co/Batman and https://dolbylabs.co/BatmanReturns.
