AVENGERS: ENDGAME Review by Bill Ramey

I think I’m going to have to do some prefacing before I get to my review of AVENGERS: ENDGAME.

I grew up a DIEHARD Batman fan (and DC fan by osmosis) and never really got into any Marvel characters outside of Spider-Man (which may be my second fave comic book character truth be told, for real) and The Hulk.

As far as the Marvel Cinematic Universe, while I’ve seen and liked most of the movies (though there are some that I passed on and some that I didn’t enjoy), I never really got invested in this shared universe — which is probably because I’m simply not a “Marvel Guy.”

When it comes to the three previous AVENGERS films, I enjoyed the first one, didn’t care much for AGE OF ULTRON, and didn’t see INFINITY WAR until recently due to, well, disinterest. (FYI: IW is a bit overrated IMO.)

To be honest, I didn’t plan on seeing ENDGAME at all.  In fact, I hemmed and hawed over RSVP’ing to see it once I got my press screening invitation a couple of weeks ago.  Hell, I even told both BOF’s Rick Shew and Jo Hyde to make sure they see and review it because I didn’t plan on going.

But ultimately, I went to the screening…

And I’m glad I did.

AVENGERS: ENDGAME is fun, funny, and quite moving at times.  I liked it a lot and it’s one of my favorite MCU movies to date along with the original IRON MAN, SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING, the original CAPTAIN AMERICA, and THE INCREDIBLE HULK.

For me, it’s the core AVENGERS team and cast — Thor (Chris Hemsworth), The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), (Black Widow) Scarlett Johansson, Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), and most importantly (and there’s a reason I say that and you shall see), Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr) and Captain America (Chris Evans) — that I most liked about this movie.  They are the core — as well as the heart and soul — of the film and for a kinda-sorta finale, that’s exactly how it should be.  I had no issue with the ultimate fates of anything of these characters (though I admittedly can’t wait to see how audiences react).

Another take on the cast: I absolutely love Thor and The Hulk in this movie!  I won’t say why, but I think once you see it, you’ll agree with me. (I never figured I’d see a nod to a Cohen brothers film in a comic book movie, you betcha!)

Also, I’m a sucker for a good ‘ol time travel movie or story, and a good chunk of ENDGAME is just that and it’s very well executed.  In fact, it provides a way to revisit some other AVENGERS/MCU movies and see characters from those films as well as actors that played them.  And of course, when you go back in time, crazy, universe-shattering shenanigans can ensue!  (There’s also some cool and funny nods to past time travel movies I enjoyed and I think you all will too.)

Now, I did have a few issues with the movie, OK?  While I won’t dwell on them, I must be fair and point them out: The CGI is WAY too CGI’y (yeah, that’s a made-up word, but you know what I mean) at times and it was distracting, there were some slow spells that that had me looking at my watch, and yeah, it’s long AF.

Nonetheless, my bottom line on AVENGERS: ENDGAME is that I really liked it and there were parts of it that I absolutely loved.  I’ve gotta give Marvel Films their props for pulling off this decade-plus run of films with its BIG overall story that culminated in an extremely satisfying finish.

Go see this movie and enjoy the heck out of it like I did…or maybe even more…probably. – Bill “Jett” Ramey
