THE BATMAN’s GCPD HBO Max Spinoff to Focus on Gordon, Allegedly

Jeffery Wright as Jim Gordon in THE BATMAN

According to Ed Brubaker (via Kevin Smith’s FATMAN BEYOND podcast), HBO Max’s GOTHAM CITY POLICE DEPARTMENT spinoff of THE BATMAN will not be based on the GOTHAM CENTRAL comic book published by DC in the early 2000s.  Instead, GCPD will focus on one James Gordon.  Here’s what Brubaker– who co-wrote the series with Greg Rucka — had to say about it…

I was like ‘maybe they’re really going to make Gotham Central this time,’ and so I reached out to a producer who works for Matt Reeves and he says, ‘no, that’s not really Gotham Central.’  They’re making sure that they don’t call it Gotham Central and it’s more of a spinoff from the movie [THE BATMAN]. It’s like the James Gordon show.

GCPD will be set in “Year One” of Batman’s career and take place before the events that occur in THE BATMAN.  If indeed the focus is on GCPD’s Jim Gordon, then it would be safe to assume that Jeffery Wright will be reprising his role of Gordon from THE BATMAN in the HBO Max series.  Since Batman (played by Robert Pattinson in THE BATMAN) will exist during the events of GCPD, one must wonder if Pattinson will make an appearance as the rookie Dark Knight?
