Brendan Fraser Cast as Villain in BATGIRL

2292

According to the trades (DEADLINE, THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER), Brendan Fraser has been cast as a villain in the upcoming BATGIRL film for HBO Max.

The scuttlebutt amongst the trades is that the role is that of the Batman villain Firefly.

Fraser joins a cast featuring Leslie Grace as Barbara Gordon/Batgirl and J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon amongst others.  Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are directing a script written by Christina Hodson (THE FLASH, BIRDS OF PREY).

Details of the story or a plot synopsis have yet to be released.

It appears that BATGIRL will be a part of the DC films that “connect” — given that J.K. Simmons is reprising the role of Commissioner Gordon from JUSTICE LEAGUE (both versions).  However, since THE FLASH is supposed to dramatically shake up and “reconfigure,” if you will, DC on film when it arrives in theaters in November 2022, it’ll be interesting to see how BATGIRL will fit within that cinematic world.

And then there’s the Batman question…

Which version of Batman is or was Babs Gordon’s mentor?  It’s definitely not the Robert Pattinson version that we’ll see on the big screen in March of 2022 in Matt Reeves’ THE BATMAN.  So, is she the Bat-successor to the Batman played by Ben Affleck who might no longer be around/exist post-THE FLASH?  Or, is she the protege of the older Batman played by Michael Keaton?  And if it’s the latter, will Keaton be in the film?

BATGIRL is scheduled to be released sometime in 2022.  – Bill “Jett” Ramey
