There’s a human Pennyworth in the manor again.
Last issue’s final image carries over to this month’s cover in BATMAN #12. Verity Pennyworth gets the vouching from her great Uncle Alfred (the AI version). And just like that, she’s assisting above and below ground, making a breakthrough that helps our hero.
Aside from the butler, there’s a new group of villains/assassins making their way to Gotham. The reason, or the thing they all have in common: Bruce Wayne.
This was an interesting issue from writer Matt Fraction. At first, the new butler almost had my eyes rolling. I just want the real Alfred back. However, I’ll give this new character a chance.
Which seems to be what I’ve been saying with Fraction for a year. He’s been setting the table for 12 issues now, and I’m waiting for a culmination. I don’t mind being patient, but it seems like I’m being asked each month, “just wait one more!”
Now, that doesn’t mean this is a bad issue. I actually found it to be good. I enjoyed the new threats, and how Batman took a couple down (with the help of Ms. Pennyworth). It leaves some intrigue for what’s next, and if someone was in fact inside of a certain car that blew up.
Again, Jorge Jiménez knocks it out of the park on the penciling duties. His panels move, and those scenes are electric. I’ve long complimented the artist’s big and small scenes, and these issues of late have been smaller in scope, and hit twice as hard. There’s great action, and enjoyable conversational moments. A good balance.
Overall, I enjoyed this issue. Yes, I’m waiting for a big “ah ha” moment where all of the pieces are in play and ready to pay off. But moving the pieces is also entertaining, so I’m anything but bored. – Ryan Lower
