Sebastian Stan recently did an interview with VARIETY about his upcoming film FJORD, and had a few things to say about the movie he’s currently filming, THE BATMAN PART II. Here’s a few blurbs of the Batman stuff:
Being a MCU alum doing a DC film
Two things happened at the same time. I got a call to go meet Matt Reeves, who had seen THE APPRENTICE and loved it and said, ‘I want to talk to you about this new movie.’ And at the same time, I’d reached out to James Gunn and said, ‘Listen, man, I’m just letting you know — I’m here, I’m alive and well, I’m ready to rock.’ And then it happened. I still feel like sometimes I’m like, did I leave the team for the other team? These worlds keep going parallel, and weirdly they help each other.
Is he a Batman fan?
100%. My favorite superhero movie is BATMAN RETURNS — I remember exactly where I saw it, over Christmas. I didn’t see the original first. It was Michelle Pfeiffer, Danny DeVito and I was obsessed with that movie. I also, shamefully, really like BATMAN FOREVER — I love The Riddler, I love Jim Carrey … [Tommy Lee Jones is] an amazing actor. I don’t quite know. In that movie, Jim Carrey overshadowed him. But, growing up in Europe, Batman was the most recognizable thing to me. So when the MCU came first, it opened a door to comics I didn’t grow up with and I thought, well, that’s it, there’s no way I can get to the other side. No one’s going to hire me; I’ll be Bucky.
On the secrecy behind who he’s playing in THE BATMAN PART II
Look, there’s no way to keep any secret anymore. What I’ll say is this: there’s no way people will fully grasp how this movie is until they see it. I go to set sometimes and I look around and I’m like, ‘I think we’re making fucking THE GODFATHER PART 2’ — I feel that highly about it. Matt has spent three years working on it. There’s a lot of speculation about these roles, about what this movie is, but I think it’s going to be a good payoff — it’s really grounded and real, and that’s what I loved about it. You want to tease it a little, but we still have a long time.

Good stuff…though I am very upset with SS about BATMAN RETURNS being his favorite superhero movie. However, I am very happy that he likes and appreciates BATMAN FOREVER. Consider yourself immediately redeemed in my eyes, Mr. Stan. ANYWAY…
In regard to who he is actually playing in the film and the secrecy behind it, hey, y’all know I’m all for it. The less we know the better is my mantra. And he’s right that there’s no way to keep things a secret anymore in this day and age even though Matt Reeves and co. are actually doing fans a service by keeping them in the dark on things because it will ultimately make the seeing the movie a better experience. Of course, no one has to worry about seeing or reading something they don’t want to about THE BATMAN PART II here on BOF. We’re here to enjoy the ride and film experience with you, not spoil or ruin it for anyone.
Finally, there’s no doubt in my mind that Matt Reeves has crafted something really special with this film. And I couldn’t care less that it has taken as long as it has to make it. So, at the end of the day, if THE BATMAN PART II is up there on the level of THE GODFATHER PART 2, it’ll certainly be worth the wait. Frankly, I hope all of you who are reading this realize that with Matt Reeves and THE BATMAN EPIC CRIME SAGA, this is very likely the last time we have a true auteur in charge of making Batman films. This is no shade thrown on the DCU, but you just don’t get the filmmaker-driven, creative autonomy with a shared universe.
