We’re in the back half of Jeph Loeb’s BATMAN: THE LAST HALLOWEEN, and this beast keeps roaring.
After an interesting, albeit “OK”, issue last month (admittedly the art wasn’t my favorite), this chapter adds more depth, answers, questions, and teases. Two-Face puts a gun to the head of a Harvey Dent ally. Batman and Gordon try to solve the disappearance of Mario Falcone. The Dynamic Duo acts like a detective unit in The Batcave. And Catwoman is seeing green, while wanting to meet Mama Falcone.
Jeph Loeb continues to do what Jeph Loeb does here. He creates a chapter of a big story that builds on what’s come before, while laying seeds for what’s to come. All of it snaps together, adding intrigue and mystery. The Batman internal dialogue is just as smooth as it was in THE LONG HALLOWEEN nearly 30 years ago, making Loeb one of the best to fit inside the hero’s cowl. I particularly liked the scene where Batman and Robin are working together in the cave, building on a scene found in DARK VICTORY (something Loeb is also excellent at doing). Story, dialogue, and plot are back in top form here.
The artist in this month’s chapter is Enrico Marini, and he does a spectacular job here. As each artist thus far has been assigned to do, he brings a style that works within this world, yet isn’t trying to be a Tim Sale knockoff. Marini brings his unique pencils to create a great atmosphere, with distinct characters that slip into this story well. A great addition to this carousel of artists THE LAST HALLOWEEN has included.
Overall, this issue brings an upswing to the story, making some connections while guiding us to new revelations. I’m enjoying this ride, and there’s still plenty of road left to travel. – Ryan Lower
