Matt Reeves Talks THE BATMAN (or Whatever It’ll be Called)

Matt Reeves - Writer/Director/Producer of THE BATMAN

Well, THIS is the most we’ve heard from writer/director Matt Reeves about his (hopefully) upcoming solo Batman film.

But ultimately, it really ain’t all that much folks.

Via SLASHFILM.COM, here’s a few blurbs from Mr. Reeves regarding his Batman film during the Television Critics Association panel, while promoting his midseason Fox drama, THE PASSAGE.

While Mr. Reeves seemingly kept things close the the chest, was in total “PR mode,” and answered the Batfleck question very politically correct, he did give us some new info that we didn’t know before.

The Status of the Script

“We are working on getting our draft [in] the next couple weeks,” Reeves said. “Right now, my head is totally into the script. Right now, I’m going to be leaving here to go back to work on the script.”

On Ben Affleck Returing/Where Does This Fit in the DC on Film Universe

“There are ways in which all of this connects to DC, to the DC universe as well.  We’re one piece of many pieces so I don’t want to comment on that except to say that I’m focused very specifically on this aspect of the DC world.”

I figure that THIS is what Mr. Affleck will be focusing on for the next few years. (And it’s right up his alley and I hope he gets his A+ director groove back on dammit! I remain a HUGE BA fan.)

On “This Aspect of the DC World”

“From the beginning, what I had always spoken about with Warner Bros. and what I was excited about was being in the Batuniverse and really doing something within that sphere.  That was always what it was going to be so in that way it hasn’t changed a lot since I first met with them.”

It’s Gonna Be Noir-ish

“I’ve talked about making it a very point of view noir-driven definitive Batman story in which he is investigating a particular case and that takes us out into the world of Gotham.”

And, When Could Filming Start?

“What we’ve talked about is hopefully in the spring or early summer [of 2019], something like that.”

Here’s what I gathered from these comments…

Nothing...except that he’s still working on the script and he’s going with a very noir vibe.  AND, he’s saying all the right words about Ben Affleck’s status (he GONE).

As someone who has been to many of these sort of press things, keep in mind that Matt Reeves was being politically correct as heck.  Also, an article based on very black-and-white comments probably doesn’t do what Reeves said justice, context-wise (as there’s just a tad of opinion/conjecture thrown in by the author).  Regardless, this was a fine piece by the good folks over at SLASHFILM.COM. – Bill “Jett” Ramey
