Hang in there. The Doomsday Clock has almost struck midnight!
The latest issue of this long-running series (we are approaching 2 years!) sets us fans up for an exciting showdown, that is long overdue and was promised to us fans at the beginning of REBIRTH. We just have to wait a little longer to see it play out.
I’m not about to try and completely summarize where we are at in DOOMSDAY CLOCK, as it’s been a while since the last issue (and no current release date for the next). BUT…DC’s superheroes all fought Dr. Manhattan on Mars and got their clocks cleaned. A few of the notorious ones (Black Adam, Giganta, Creeper) remained here on Earth, and are causing some mayhem. Batman helps prevent major destruction, Alfred tries to get Rorschach to see the right picture, Superman awakes, Lex Luthor has everything figured out, and Ozymandias confesses to his villainous plan.
Geoff Johns appears to see the finish line to this epic story and isn’t sprinting to get us there. Instead, he’s allowing everything to breathe and take its time. I’m appreciative of this, except for the delays. Unfortunately, I can’t remember everything very clearly with each new issue, so I’m having to take a lot of breaks to make connections. So while I’ve been following along issue-by-issue, I kind of envy the comic readers who are waiting for the trade and can knock it all out in a sitting or two. Regardless, I still believe this story is daring, tight, and entertaining and can’t see how everything snaps together next issue.

Nothing has changed in any review on my opinion of Gary Frank’s art. It’s fascinating, detailed, intricate, and gorgeous. His strength always lies in the emotions emitting from the character’s faces. The eyes are always big and bright. Eyebrows lower with anger, or rise with sympathy, or even tighten with pain. A story can successfully take us anywhere as long as we’re feeling for the characters. And Frank has no problem with getting us on board.
DOOMSDAY CLOCK is ready to wrap. We have one issue to go and I can’t wait to see how it ends. I’ll be rereading the entire run before the finale, so I can write a better review and really feel that final punch that this creative team will no doubt deliver.
